Founder's Story

As a second-generation Vietnamese-American, I was raised in a household that focused on fully assimilating to American culture. In my formative years, I struggled with the Asian part of "Asian American." Being Asian was seen as odd and foreign so in order to fit in, I decided to push aside that part of me and be fully American.

Growing up in the 90s, I enjoyed watching American cartoons and playing video games, and had little exposure to anything traditional related to my Vietnamese culture and language. In my parents’ free time, they shared their hobbies with me which included sewing and watching old films. My mother introduced me to hand sewing and eventually how to use a sewing machine. My father introduced me to classics like Drunken Master (1978) and The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). Both of these hobbies I still enjoy doing today.

In 2023, several life events happened which led me to creating Senzo Tiger. I was getting older and looking back at my childhood, I was slowly regretting not embracing my heritage. I was also advancing in my professional career and needed more work bags to carry on my daily commute.

In my search for a new bag, I had a specific criteria in mind; I wanted it to be Asian inspired, made well, and organized. I couldn't find anything so I decided to make my own bag by combining my sewing knowledge and appreciation for Asian cultures. 

I had the idea but needed a name and direction for this new venture. I looked back at one of the old films my dad and I watched and there was an Asian character who was a spy. It was one of the first times I saw Asian representation on the silver screen and as an added bonus, this character even outsmarted the lead character. The name Senzo Tiger was based on him and the design direction was, “What bag would this spy use if he was around today.” He would want it to be functional, classic but using modern advancements in fabrics, have a bit of flair, and lastly proudly display his Asian Heritage. 

After 2 years of development, I’m ready to share my first product with you, the Modern Briefcase, which meets the Senzo Tiger criteria. 

I hope this bag serves as a reminder to celebrate your individuality and confidently express who you are, wherever your journey takes you.
